The title Professor is used by teachers at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is considered rude by some to not address a member of staff as professor, Madam, or Sir. Professors have the power to award and dock points, give detention and write notes for certain areas and activities that are usually off limits, such as the Restricted Section in the Hogwarts Library or permission to practice on the Quidditch pitch. However, most importantly, they must teach the material of their designated subject. They are also considered to be experts in their area of study. For example, if the school needs to create protective charms to defend the school, it would fall under the Charms' teacher's responsibilities to do so. The Dark Arts encompass many spells and actions ranging from using the Unforgivable Curses to brewing harmful or poisonous potions to breeding Dark creatures such as Basilisks, and its practice is generally illegal. Students do not practice the use of dark arts, but rather study the theory behind it, such as how Basilisks are made and what Horcruxes are. There are a few exceptions however. The Unforgivable curses and some spells such as Fiendfyre are taught through the course of the year as optional studies for Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Year students. In order to participate in such lessons, a signed permission slip is required. Many plants provide ingredients for potions and medicine, while others have magical effects of their own right. Herbology is a mandatory class at Hogwarts for the first five years of a student's education. Classes are held in different greenhouses depending on the students' year, with more advanced and dangerous plants typically reserved for O.W.L. or N.E.W.T.-level study. Potions Potions is a subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this class, students learn how to brew potions, following specific recipes and using various magical ingredients to create their potions, starting with simple ones first and moving to more advanced ones as they progress in knowledge.
