Several days had passed since the rather... interesting gathering in the Great Hall. Monroe had been taken on as a teaching assistant for the very same Dark Arts courses that had been debated, and the mere memory of the look of indignation on some of the other students' faces was enough to bring a smile to his lips.
They all needed to lighten up, he thought, pulling a heavy turtleneck sweater over his head. His boots came next, carefully laced up around his jeans (he did so love winter break's casual dress code), followed by his winter coat and gloves. Yes, everyone just needed to calm down and let things happen. He carefully ignored the fact that he had half-muggle blood coursing through his veins, and that so many of the higher-ups were getting their panties in a bunch over the status of blood purity.
If it came down to an all-out brawl over who screwed and had children with who, maybe he'd start paying attention to politics... But not a single second before.
Instead, he was planning on wasting his time playing in the snow. Other students that had stayed for the holiday had very much the same idea, and remnants of snowmen and snow angels littered the grounds. The chill of the winter air reached him long before he found his way outside, and he was glad for the layers he had thought to put on.
Finally, with the snow crunching beneath his boots and breath coming in visible plumes from his open mouth, he stood on the grounds and surveyed his surroundings. The snow was like an open canvas, just asking for him to sculpt, or to pelt passing first-years with a relentless torrent of snowballs.
He smiled, wolfish and predatory, and got to work. With the assistance of magic, he built up a fort just outside the castle. The walls sloped away but were substantial enough for him to duck behind if the need presented itself, and he busied himself with making an armory of snowballs.
The next step, he figured, was to wait for someone -- anyone -- to pass. And then the fun would begin.

Sophia often prided herself on her ability to remain calm and composed in the face of some of the most dire circumstances, however the accumulation of unsettling and arduous events that had unfolded in the past week alone seemed to have finally caught up with her.
Originally, she had anticipated heading home to spend the holidays with her family, but had instead received a letter the morning of the meeting in the Great Hall, expressing heartfelt apologies over the illness of her mother and siblings. It seemed they'd all contracted quite a serious virus and were unable to entertain. This then meant of course that she would be left spending winter break alone and at school with a handful of people she would have much rather avoided; especially after the fiasco revolving around Hogwarts' new curriculum. Not only had she suffered public humiliation at the hands of her Professors, but had also established newfound rivalries with students from the Slytherin house. They in particular had found themselves rather unimpressed with her show of bravado. Needless to say, there had been many passing comments in relation to her non-magical parentage and apparently unforgivable behaviour.
So with her face buried shamefully in a handknit scarf and slender hands stuffed unelegantly inside of her coat pockets, Sophia strode through the empty corridors and out through the tall doors of the castle entrance, intent on stirring in her own misery away from everyone and everything. What she hadn't taken into account were the sparkling white drifts of snow that coated the grounds and her peers' excitement at the prospect of a good, old fashioned snowball fight. It happened every year. She would find herself minding her own business and be pummeled mercilessly by cold, wet snow and then laughed at as she ran to take cover.
Small children could be quite malicious if the mood struck them.
Fortunately she couldn't see any sign of lingering first or second years, and breathed a sigh of relief as she was embraced instead with the smell of fresh pine and the cool touch of frigid winter air. In the distance she noticed that the lake had yet to freeze over, its black surface a stark contrast to the flawlessly white snow that surrounded it. As she strolled casually down the first few steps, her eyes were then drawn to a pair of owls that floated high over the trees of the Forbidden Forest, their pointed tops liberally iced and branches groaning in protest against the persistence of the wind. Icicles glistened prettily from the frosted greenhouse in the glare of the afternoon sunlight, and suddenly ... Sophia was overcome with awe at such beauty she'd never cared to notice before.
It almost made such an awful week worthwhile.

The past few weeks had been a bit hard on any Gryffindor! They seem to be ridiculed left and right by just about anyone, even Professors joined in on the fun! How awful! But Harriett remained as enthusiastic as ever. She never let her spirits dampen TOO much. There was no point in getting sad over things. Not only was it bad for your health but what could you do if you were sad? Besides, smiling at your enemies tended to confuse them! And she enjoyed very much looking at their confused faces. Though that confusion did tend to turn into more hostility...
Sophia had been in misery since that day, Harriett took notice. So she came up with an idea! She would give her a gift that would brighten her spirits! Gifts always made people happy, didn't they? They were most certainly the best thing. Harriett didn't want anything in return, she just wished to see a smile on Sophia's pretty face. :3
"Hey, Sophia! Wait up! I have something to show you!"
Her boots sunk into the snow as she ran after Sophia. The girl had only just recently completed the gift for Sophia and had searched for her ever since. Now she was staring at the other girl's far away backside. Finally she reached the girl and she bent down to catch her breath. When she had caught her breath, she stood up right and gave Sophia her most famous bucktoothed grin, holding out a cute little wrapped up box with a cute little red bow on top.
"I got you a gift! Merry Christmas!"
When Sophia opened the box, she would find a small amulet. It was a necklace and the amulet had a round Black Onyx with two tiny Hematite pearls as the eyes of the owl that stared straight ahead at the front. It was a magical necklace to ward off evil! So basically, it was a good luck charm! Inside there would be a note explaining the significance of the necklace, plus a note from Harriett that read as:
Merry Christmas, Sophia! Even though it isn't Christmas yet, and you haven't been wanting company lately, I hope this gift cheers you up! You have looked so sad as of late, a pretty face like yours should be smiling! May you live a long and happy life! Your Friend, Harriett <3 P.S. Watch out for flying snow!

Daphne stood over Monroe like a hawk. It had been some time since she last talked to him, especially after what had happened between them. She wanted to talk, but it seemed that the words she wanted would never come out. What had happened had somehow made their relationship much more awkward. In all their years, having gone from enemies, to friends, to best friends... and now whatever they were. Daphne had never guessed that awkward intimacy could bring them to this level. She had thought that after it, they would have gone straight to boyfriend and girlfriend, but she had been very wrong.
Daphne couldn't decide if she should get into the fort with him or stay outside of it. It was a tough decision to make. If she got in, what would happen? Would there just be more awkward discussion, or rather stuttering? It wasn't just him. She couldn't say anything either. Hm. Regardless, against her better senses, Daphne threw one leg over the fort's walls and came inside of it. She knelt down beside him.
"S-So what? Plan on having all this fun without me? Lets get 'em." Without waiting for a response, she rolled up a ball of snow stood up and threw it at the fort. If lucky, she'd hit Harriett in the face.
